Electric motors
IPM or SPM? Why We Lean Toward Interior Magnets
Most permanent magnet motors fall into one of two designs: interior permanent magnet (IPM), where the magnets sit embedded inside the rotor, or surface permanent magnet (SPM), where they're mounted on the rotor's exterior. For high-speed, high-torque applications like traction motors, we generally favour IPM — embedding the magnets gives better control over the magnetic circuit, which means near-constant power across a wide speed range and up to 30% lower power consumption than a comparable conventional motor. It also means better mechanical safety, since the magnets can't work loose under centrifugal force the way they can on an SPM rotor's surface. SPM still has its place, but as demands for efficiency and high-speed performance have grown, IPM has become the more common choice in electric and hybrid vehicle applications.
